The Chinese army was made up of many different people. From agricultural labourers to skilled swordsmen. There were archers who were long ranged infantry. There were also swordsmen, chariot archers, chariot drivers, horse-back swordsmen, spear men and many more. They eventually moved on from archery to crossbows since archery required so much training. The people who operated the crossbow were much more effective and more efficient than regular archers. The Shang king himself also fought in battles. But he was accompanied by a few thousand troops to defend him.
